The Chivay Guy

Well, I guess I always knew I was not cut out for the blog life. Granted I attributed that to my less than blog worthy living. One can really only post so much about Chick-Fil-A and Netflix. However, that is no longer the case. I am now a full time servant of the Lord in the land of the chuño and alpaca and if I do say so myself that is half-blogable. Pero, my blog game is pretty no bueno right now si me entiendes. (refer to your best Spanish to English translation source if you are new to the world of Spanglish humor por favor) Yes, I probably should step up my game. No promesas though. To my defense Perú is famous for many things high speed Internet is just not one of them.

Wow I am really not sure where to begin. Well for starters we are rolling into week 3 of the transfer here with my new companion Elder Hunter Kehoe from our very own Las Vegas. I would challenge you all for the traditional Insta-stalk run-down however I highly doubt we could dig any dirt up on this guy. He´s a saint. Elder Kehoe is basically a perfect missionary. (still looking for the catch tbh) He puts up with most of my jokes and I can usually get a pity laugh so that’s all I am really asking for out of a companion. My humor has really hit rock bottom people. But, anyways I think we make a great team.
Currently serving in Chivay, Caylloma, Perú or Colca Canyon (cue the google search). The population here is comparable to that of Lead´s, so things are pretty popping, if you catch my drift. The down village (wait, is that a thing) or down town I guess has a speaker system that reaches the entire village. So basically we are talking the size of a Walmart. It’s super convenient though for example last night an elderly man, Señor Dávid, was reported missing and the entire village was provided hourly updates on his where-abouts. Also when a stray alpaca heard or bicycle cart is lost they got your back. But, I got to say my personal favorite is the catholic mass broadcast to the tune of a native flute every morning.

This week it´s all about the Deacons. I have been trying to do my part as “Presidente de Hombres Jovenes”. 95% sure karma is playing a large role in this but caballero no más. The Teachers are impossible. The Priest are busy studying in Arequipa but are good guys who need a kick in the right direction. But the deacons are always down to hang out with “Hermano “My-yoy””. Truthfully we only have 3 deacons but we have a group of about 15 twelve-thirteen year olds who come to the chapel whenever the gate is open. This last mutual I named them the “Lost Boys” their parents either work or have other less wholesome pass times but the majority of them are left to play in the streets until the after sunset. One of them explained to me how his parents never really have time, and later said that coming to the chapel and learning from the “hermanitos” is his favorite part of the week. It´s easily my favorite part as well. It can definitely be discouraging sometimes working in this small branch. Being called as 1st Counselor directing the Sacrament meeting and leaving the podium to bless the sacrament. Teaching Sunday school 2nd hour and Young Men’s the 3rd while Elder Kehoe subs for the relief society. But my “Lost Boys” help me remember my love for this little Chivay branch. I know the work will move all the way throughout Colca Canyon every little village will hear the fullness of the gospel. Even if it starts with a Deacons quorum.  ´

Other “bloggable” highlights:

-       Gnarly stomach flu got me feeling sometime of way.
-
The City invited Elder Kehoe and I to march in the Independence Day parade, we opted out and helped with some of the volunteer work.
-
Elder Kehoe has caught on to the fact that when asked to lead hymns I just wave my hand in a cursive L shape and is now trying to teach me. (again Elder Kehoe has an incredibly amount of patience haha)
-
My awesome, not so kid anymore, sister Abby sent me the best package an Elder has ever seen.
-
The tally mark count up for number of times a donkey entered the chapel for the last transfer was 8.

Love you guys.
Elder Malloy.

feliz 4 de julio mis gringitos

earth to America,

Hey guys, ending yet another freakishly fast and spiritually jammed
pack week in Chivay.
This week has been great with Elder Diederich. Selfish to pray he has
8 months here so we can have another change together? Tal vez.

So the jist of the work in Chivay right now is PFs. Partcial member
families. We are planning two for two weddings in August so wish us
luck!

One of my favorite families we are working with right now is the Inga
Mamani family.
My first day here I met two twin girls Liset and Angie. They are 10
years old and have been baptized for 2 years, ever since I got here I
have been working hard to get the primary running again in the branch
and never really knew why. But I know now that it has been for there
family. The Inga Mamani family. Their parents have been waiting to be
baptized for almost 4 years! But they are not married and can not find
the fathers birth certificate. What a joke!
So we are working hard to file through every Peruvian birth ever
recorded to help this family to their goal of being baptized and sealed
in the temple.

highlights:
- Elder Diederich and I have set out to learn Quechua Peru´s native language
- We made french toast yesterday. Praise to the Man.
- I have found a replacement to my Capri-Sun addiction. Quinua with
apple some weird oatmealish drink they make and serve in plastic bags
with straws. I am hooked.

Love you guys.
Probably buying a Pancho today as a planned impulse buy so oops.

Elder Malloy.

June 22, 2015

Ok fam.
Another week has flown by, they strangely keep getting shorter.
This week has been a week of finding.

We have a good 15 or so new names and 10 new investigators. Pretty much Elder Diederich and I are setting out to bring all of Chivay to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
One of my favorite new investigators is Betty. We were out contacting and talking with this little lady who goes by "Mazanita" (little apple) (she literally is shaped like an apple so I the nickname was not questioned) anyways she was super excited to listen to us and excepted our invitation to be baptized with her son. Meanwhile some lady come marching in to Mazanita´s store and interrupted saying like whats going on here? We explained we were there sharing a message on behalf of Jesus Christ, she asked if she could sit in on the lesson and has been meeting with us ever since.
-- Betty works in the Plaza selling food. She always offers us sandwiches, that we just found out are made of pig head. Which is against the mission rules. oopz.

Teresa. Teresa is back with her abusive boyfriend likely because she has no where else to go. But, he has forbidden her from meeting with us. I still pray for Lucero, John, and  Milagros. I love those kids.
Highlights:

1. Showerless week due to the broken water heater and us not be down to risk hypothermia.
2. The dedication of the Trujillo Peru Temple! Arequipa is next muchachos.
3. The anniversary of Chivay = weird traditional parades and getting trampled me large crowds of people with alpaca skulls on there heads. haha
4. P-day in Chivay and sleep over in the mission home.
Btdubbz hit me up with any good mutual activities for my Young men!
love you guys,
Elder Malloy.

May 23, 2015

Hi guys.

WELP, you are probably wondering if I am still alive if you read this blog. oops.
Si, vivo peeps.

These last week have flown by so freakishly fast. I am finishing up my third and rumored to be last change working in the office this week. Bitter sweet adios-es eh?
Honestly my time here in Mirador has been so fun. So many people I love here, plus ratchet stories, and way more queso helado than I should have ate.

Weekly Highlights:

- Kristell got her temple recommend and is going to travel to Lima in August with the Young Women. I love Kristell and am so happy to see her grow in the gospel. She made me a big card this week that said her testimony with a whole bunch of ghetto sparkle craft stuff. Teresa is also getting ready to go to the temple and it just makes me so happy to see where they are headed.
- Hector is coming to church every week with his little school boy tie and suit and is still sharing his testimony with everyone he encounters. HAHA
- We found THE SICKEST family whos daughter moved to Ohio got baptized and is now on her mission in Idaho. Meanwhile her family is just here waiting to hear the gospel. More to come on them, but I am stoked!
-teaching myself to watercolor paint, no pasa nada hasta esta hora doeee.

Love you guys.

March 24, 2015

Hey guys.

Guys, this week has been hecka good here in Mirador. I think I said this last week but I love Mirador so much. It is easily the coolest area in the mission. #bendito

Kristell´s baptism was this Saturday. Kristell is like my little sister here, she reminds me so much of Abby and Taylor. (extraño esos dos) I am so happy for her! Her foot came up twice and the water was SO freezing but we had so much fun and I am so happy she is officially a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints!

love you people.

Elder Malloy.
still in the mission business.

March.14.2015

March.14.2015

Wow this week flew by, This we had all the new elders and sisters come, "consejo" or the night where the mission secretaries have to talk to all the zone leaders in this big conference, leadership counsel, and zone conference. SO yeah a lot going on. Not to mention preparing for a baptism the week to come!

 Stories for you this week;

1. Nelí,
I don´t know if anyone remebers when I talked about Nelí but we finally got to speak with her again! Nelí is the mother of a two missionaries who served in Spain a few years back and now live in Europe. The night we found her (about a month ago) she was SO happy to see us and was so excited to come to church. But, when we went back to see her she had completely changed and we had no idea why! Anyways, Thursday night we were passing by her house/store and I just felt a an impression to go in. I told Elder Rossano and he shrugged it off, due to her complete lack of interest in us the past month, I agreed we kept walking for a moment and he said "No, you´re right we need to go back." The moment we entered she came running up grabbing us by the arms telling us a long experience. She shared with us how she got discouraged to be Mormon by a friend. But in the last week she received an answer telling her that she should not have turned us away and needs to start coming to church and learning more. She talked about the light she can see in the member of the church. We were so happy! Sometimes the spirit tells us things and the natural man tries to brush it off! But I am so glad Elder Rossano and I turned around and saw Nelí that night.

2. K so today is P-day but Elder Peterson and Moreno (the other secs) had a baptism so I was in the house grabbing some things with Elder Peterson and our landlord comes to the door. I answer the door and, without introducing herself, she begins explaining how we need to kill the birds and their eggs that are nesting in our window seal. First off I was sitting there like who is this lady like I had never seen her in my life! But when I came to the conclusion that she was our land lord I tried to reason with her without confrontation #representativeofJesusChrist about how we should wait until they hatch and can fly but she would not have it! So I might be hiding fugitive bird eggs in my top drawer until they hatch. Oops.

3. The sisters in our zone called the other morning asking us for help, because they got locked out of their room. So yeah, not really sure what they were expecting us to be able to do but we swung over to try to help with "Papito" or Brother Minaya. (I can´t remember if I have told you guys about Papito, he is this 55 year old man who works for the mission and is basically in a trio with me and Elder Rossano we are his best friends and he is with us working and driving us around Arequipa to run errands sun up to sun down. Love that guy, he wears a mission plaque that says Hermano Minya haha. Anyways yeah) So we get there and tried to break in through the window but the window, but the window wouldn´t open. So Elder Moreno just starts shoving random keys in the slot and one of the Office keys worked to open their door. GHETTO. So I officially feel really safe at night now knowing that the locks here are super trustworthy. ¡MAS BAMBA! }

Everything is well here in Mirador.
I love my area, it is huge. We are in the ancient part of the city with old chapels and stone streets. We find a new cool place to contact almost everyday. The work is really moving along here and I love getting to know the people. Also, still working hard in the office.

Love you people,
Elder Lobro
